Opera Études: Shadow stretches long and white

As part of the Peabody Institute’s esteemed Opera Études class, Coverini premiered a new work by Victor Cui titled Shadoe stretches long and white. This chamber opera follows the true story of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who had traveled to North Korea in 2016. Otto was stopped at the border on his way home and arrested on a charge of subversion for supposedly taking a propaganda poster from his hotel. Although this was not proven to be him, Otto was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor and was later released in June 2017 in a vegetative state. Otto would pass just four days after his return to the states.

Coverini will be portraying Cindy Warmbier in this tragic work.

Admission is free.

The performance will take place on Monday, April 17th at the Peabody Institute’s Friedburg Hall (Baltimore, MD).
